WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN

COMPREHENSION

Your child will learn to follow story structure, plot, and character development through lively guided discussions in class, and interactive online lessons and quizzes between classes. Strong comprehension makes reading fun and rewarding.

NONFICTION & TEXTBOOKS

Your child will learn skills and strategies to meet the challenges of reading nonfiction. Students learn how to identify main ideas, recognize how information is organized, and retain what they read. They apply these new skills in nonfiction passages and science and social studies textbooks.

FLUENCY

Doing a substantial amount of reading in this program improves students’ fluency, the ability to read quickly, easily, and accurately. This makes reading effortless and pleasurable, so your child will become fully engaged in the books he or she reads.

LONG-WORD DECODING

Students learn to recognize prefixes, suffixes and syllables and practice an effective strategy for reading long words. Kids love this part of the program because it gives them the confidence to tackle more challenging reading.

INDEPENDENT READING

The most important thing your child can do to practice these skills and get ready for next year is read a lot. During this program, your child will read two classic children’s novels. Through guided class discussions, the teacher provides comprehension support and leads students to identify with the books’ characters and imaginatively participate in their adventures.  This experience of being fully absorbed in wonderful books promotes a lifelong love of reading and is the basis for future academic success.

EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION YOUR CHILD WILL LOVE

Face-To-Face Online Classes

Each week for six weeks, your child will attend an engaging and dynamic face-to-face online class. During class, students can clearly see, hear, and speak with each other and their teacher in real time. In this exciting format children maintain excellent focus, learn essential skills, and deepen their reading comprehension.

Face-to-face online classes give students a rare opportunity to interact with other entering 4th graders while discussing the program books under the direction of a teacher. Your child’s teacher will lead activities that build reading skills by helping students recognize key story elements, such as main events, plot, character development, and setting.

All that is required to participate in the class is internet access and a computer with a webcam or a mobile device with a front-facing camera. Classes are convenient and will give you the option to observe discussions and activities whenever you like.

Learning Between Classes

Between weekly classes, your child will read independently and complete fun, highly interactive online lessons. These engaging lessons support students’ comprehension and fluency as they continue to read in the wonderful program books. Other lessons teach strategies for reading and understanding nonfiction and textbooks, which is a major focus in school. Students also learn how to decode long, unfamiliar words.

Your child will absolutely love the skills lessons, and you’ll notice an increase in his or her confidence and motivation. The lessons are effective because they are tailored to your child’s reading level and promote active learning. They give students the practice needed to master new skills that will ensure their success on the first day of 4th grade and beyond.

All lessons are simple for students to complete on their own, but technology support is available if you have questions or concerns.

“For me, the only thing better than reading a great book is sharing the experience with others. My students and I are able to do just that in our online classes, and it has made all the difference.”  – Reading Skills Teacher

SIX WEEKLY CLASSES

Once a week, your child will have the unique experience of discussing program books in a live-online video class with the teacher and other students. Actively talking about what they read develops students’ personal connection to the story. This builds comprehension, confidence, and enjoyment.

These classes will be the highlight of your child’s week. Students have a great time in class because they can clearly see, hear, and speak with each other in real time. Class is a lot of fun!

“She was so excited to login every week to talk to her new friends from class about the books. Not only did she think the online classes were cool, but the teacher really kept her attention and interest. Her comprehension improved. She was motivated to get on the computer every single week!”

Jenny Doe

Parent of an Entering 4th Grader

Because the weekly classes occur online, they are convenient. Students can attend each class from home or even on-the-go, as long as they have a good internet connection and a device with video and audio capabilities.  If you have an unavoidable scheduling conflict there are options for taking a make-up class.

“The online class made our busy lives a lot easier and ensured that he was still learning. We went on a vacation one week and he didn’t want to miss seeing his friends in class (he loved class THAT much) so he joined in from the car using our iPad. WOW!”

Jeff Doe

Parent of an Entering 4th Grader

ENTHUSIASTIC TEACHER

Our teachers are passionate about books and excited to share the love of reading with students of all ages. For nearly 50 years, the Institute of Reading Development has trained teachers to engage with students in a variety of class settings.

These classes are productive and so much fun. I love teaching online – it really doesn’t feel different than teaching in a traditional classroom. I get to know all of my students. The kids enjoy it and they’re able to focus even more on the discussion because there aren’t physical distractions like in a traditional classroom.

Summer Reading Skills teachers understand the importance of warm, open communication with students and parents. In addition to leading your child’s weekly live-online class, your teacher will be available to discuss your child’s progress and answer questions during the program.

I am so happy that I’ve found a way to share my love of reading with students to help them succeed, both personally and academically. Often kids who don’t like to read simply don’t understand the story, and this class provides them with the support they need to improve and feel confident.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Our fun, independent practice sessions are customized to your child’s reading level and support what students learn in live-online classes. Between weekly classes, your child can complete the independent practice at his or her own pace. The individualized, highly interactive sessions keep all students motivated and on-track throughout the program.

The practice lessons were great for my child and he was able to complete them on his own without a struggle. I found that he liked them enough that I didn’t even have to remind him to login and do his work!

Parent of an Entering 4th Grader

The sessions are simple for students to complete on their own, but technology support is available if you or your child have any questions.

“My child found it easy to do her practice sessions independently. When I asked how she was doing, she’d often tell me, “I’m already done!” and show me her progress. She was very proud of her accomplishments.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Summer Reading Skills Program right for my child?

All entering 4th graders benefit from improving their reading skills over the summer. During live online classes, the teacher provides support and guidance for each student. Interactive skills lessons are tailored to each child’s skill level and needs. Every student makes progress during the program.

What happens during the live online classes?

Each live online class lasts for 75 minutes. These weekly classes are led by trained, enthusiastic teachers. Students can see, hear, and interact with each other and the teacher in real time. Every class includes comprehension-building discussions about the program books, along with activities to build students’ reading skills. Classes are engaging, positive, and productive for students.

What kind of internet access do I need to participate in the program?

A broadband internet connection with a common provider will work fine. (Prior to the start of live online classes, you’ll receive an email with setup and login instructions and a link to join the class.)

What kind of computer or equipment do I need for the live online classes?

To participate in live online classes, your child will need access to a computer (Mac or PC) or tablet (Apple or Android) with working web camera, speakers, and microphone. We do not currently support Kindle or Chromebook. While it is possible to access class on an Apple or Android mobile phone, we recommend using a device with a larger screen for the best class experience.

What will my child do between classes?

Between classes, your child will complete independent reading assignments and interactive skills lessons. Lessons cover skills like comprehension, reading nonfiction, and long-word decoding. The lessons are easy for students to follow and complete on their own. Technology support is available.

How do I choose which level of instruction is appropriate for my child?

Interactive skills lessons are tailored to students’ current reading level. Use the following guidelines to determine what level is right for your child:

Weak Reader — Your child has struggled with reading in 3rd grade and experiences frustration while reading.

Average Reader — Your child has been on track with reading in 3rd grade.

Strong Reader — Your child has been very successful with reading in 3rd grade.

Can I attend class with my child?

Parents are welcome to attend all or part of any live online class with their child, but are not required to do so. Many parents enjoy observing the classes.

Is it possible to make up missed classes?

Yes, in the event of a scheduling conflict, you’ll have the option to take a make-up class. You can contact customer support to schedule a live online make-up class at another time or with another teacher.

What is the class size?

To ensure that all students have a great experience, we cap enrollment at a maximum of 20 students. Your child will get personal attention from the teacher and have a chance to actively participate in class discussions.

Is there a discount for enrolling more than one student in the program?

Yes. Programs are available for students entering every grade level, so we encourage you to sign up everyone in your family. After you enroll one student, you will receive a $20 discount for each additional student you enroll. This discount only applies to family members at the same mailing address.
